  • To qualify for a medical weight management program you need to have a BMI of 30 OR a BMI of 27 plus weight-related medical comorbidity (ie. hypertension, arthritis, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, pre-diabetes, diabetes)

  • -Most patients experience a 10-20% weight loss over 6-12 months

  • ORAL MEDICATIONS - average weight loss varies from 5%-10% (ie. weight of 200 lbs could expect a 5-10 pound weight loss)

    Metformin -improves insulin sensitivity therefore decreases insulin resistance and benefits metabolism

    Phentermine- stimulant appetite suppressant

    Topiramate suppresses appetite acts in CNS

    Bupropion -dopamine/norepinephrine action to decrease cravings

    Naltrexone- decreases cravings by agonizing opioid receptors

    NEWER INJECTABLE MEDICATIONS - average weight loss 15% (ie weight of 200 lbs could expect a 30 pound weight loss)

    These medications are in a class called GLP 1 receptor agonists. They include:

    Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Terzepitide

  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that plays important roles in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. These drugs increase this hormone by agonizing the receptors, this causes:Slower stomach emptying. When digestion is slowed down, nutrients in food are released more slowly. This prevents blood sugar from spiking after a meal.

    Increased insulin production. GLP-1 receptor agonists help your body make more insulin IF NEEDED. This insulin is released after a meal when your blood sugar level rises. It is only released in response to glucose so it will not cause low blood sugar.

    Reduces sugar released from the liver. The liver can release extra sugar into the blood as needed. GLP-1 RAs prevent the liver from putting too much sugar into your bloodstream.

    Decreasing appetite through leptin (hunger hormone) regulation.

    Newer studies with these medications are showing improvements in cardiovascular risk profile, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and preservation of pancreatic beta cell function.

  • This program is available for $270/month. This includes full Primary Care and Women’s health services. Patients can expect to be seen monthly for approximately the first 6-8 months. After that, visits may decrease to every 2-3 months depending on weight loss and maintenance phase. 

    Medication cost: Insurance is utilized if certain criteria is met and the drug is covered by the insurance prescription plan.

    If not covered by insurance, additional medication costs may vary for oral medications: $20-$100 monthly.

    For injectable medications, such as compounded semaglutide, the cost ranges from $150-$270, depending on the dosage.
